<image:title>Sculpture - Seated figure in hoody with cap (study for a statue in splendid isolation)</image:title>
<image:caption>Recycled bottle resin, beluga black paint, crystal glaze laqueur, felt 260cmx140mmx140mm Splendid isolation is body of work started during the first lockdown of 2020, which continues the theme of exploring the contemporary shape and function of the traditional public statue- a thing which was thrown into the public consciousness at the time. Inspired by the question we are all conscious of, asking us what should be presented in public in such an unchanging manner (as a person shaped statue), these studies reflect the fluid poise of contemporary urban subjects seen isolated and separate from their surroundings whilst being a part of that landscape, a public anonymity that is still full of grace and beauty and pride. Inspired by the study of the ballet dancer Nijinsky by Rodin, the work focuses on the physical presence of the subject to attempt a greater sense of realism through its form. The flow of light on the glossy monochrome surface highlights the process of melting the fluid immediacy of the sculpted wax original, further blending and blurring the surface to create the sense of silhouette and shadow form without obvious detail. The sumptuous delicacy of the shapes may at first glance appear arbitrary or random, but on closer inspection they reveal a fold of cloth, a delicate ripple of hair, a zip fastener, revealing a deliberate and specific technical mastery behind the forms. Each piece is hand signed and numbered in a limited edition of 25, finished with a felt base. The material is a resin made from recycled plastics.</image:caption>
